5 Ways to check your Hard Drive Health

There are several ways to check the health of the Hard drive, here we are going to discuss the 5 ways to analyze the health of your hard drive and by using these ways, you can see if your hard drives are healthy are failing. Get certain hard drive problems automatically fixed, see if your hard drives are overheating, see how much your hard drives have been used in their lifetime, and estimate the days before your hard drive will fail. Let's discuss these health checking ways one by one.

Using the Command Prompt

  •    Just go to your search bar and Type “cmd” and open up your command prompt
  •   Now type “wmic diskdrive get status, model”
  •  Within a few seconds you will see your all the hard drive listed
  • If this test finds, your drive or drives are healthy then we will see the “OK” status next to each one
  • If there will be anything wrong with one of the drives then you will find the “Pred Fail” in the staus which means that particular drive is unhealthy and try to take the backup as soon as possible. This message strongly indicates that your drive is about to fail in the near future.
  • This is the very basic test and it takes only a few seconds but it's good to run to quickly find out the health status of your Hard Drive or Drives.

Using Windows Check Disk

  • This test generally takes around 5 minutes or less, if there are no problems are found.
  • Check Disk can check the health of the Hard Drives, Flash Drives, and Memory Cards and it can also fix some of the certain hard drive problems as well. To check the health through the Windows Check Disk
  • Simply Go to your File Explorer and click on “This PC”
  • In the Devices and drive section you will see all your hard and optical drives
  • Whatever the drive you want to test, go to the Properties of that particular Drive
  • Click on the Tools Tab and under that jus simply click on the “Check Now” and Scan the Drive
  • This Test may Ask you to Restart your Computer
  • This Test will check the File System Errors, Corrupted files, Bad Sectors, and lost clusters
  • This test may take from 5 to 15 minutes depending upon the size and data on your drive
  • Once the test is finished and if your drives are “OK” then t=you will see the Message “No Errors were Found”
  • If there were errors and this test was able to fix then the message “Errors Were found and Fixed” will be displayed but
  • If there were some errors that this test could not fix then the message “Errors were found but not fixed” will be displayed
  • If you find this last message then this is not a good sign so as quickly as possible take the backup of the drive

Crystal Disk Info

  •         In this method we will use the program called Crystal Disk Info
  •          This Programme will continuously keep an eye on your on our hard drive and check the health consistently. It will give you quite a lot of information about your Drives

  •          Under the Quick Download section, Download the “Crystal Diskinfo Standard Edition”
  •          Once your program gets downloaded then click on the file and follow the simple installation steps
  •          Once it installed then just start the program, it will display the number of drives in your PC. Click on any of the Drives then it will show the size of your drive,  the health status of your hard drive, the Temperature, the total number of hours this drive has been powered on in its life time, the number of times it has been started up, and various other information it provides on the main display
  •         If there is a problem with one of your drives, then it will show the health under the status
  •         It shows the health with the help of different types of color dots
  •          Blue Dots means everything is Good, Yellow dot is a caution, and if you see Red Dots then back up your drive immediately as it indicates, your drive will fail very soon.
  •          But hopefully, you will see all the blue dots means your drive is completely healthy
  •          This program runs at the background and use very little resources of your PC and there would not be any performance issues on your computer by installing this program.

Using Hard Drives Manufacturer’s Software

  • For testing the health of your hard drive, you can use the Manufactures software as well. For an example if you have a Western Digital Hard Drive, then download the software called “Data lifeguard Diagnostic” which can test any western digital hard drive
  • The reason why it is a good idea to use this is, the Western Digital own software can test their own hard drives better than anything else

  •  If you have Maxtor or Seagate Hard Drives then its best to use the software called “SeaTools” Download the SeaTools for Windows Here Download
  •  If you have Samsung solid state (Samsung SSDs) then use “Samsung Magician” Download here Download
  • If you are not sure which Hard drive you have the simply Click on the search button and type system information
  • Click on the plus sing behind the Components and expand it
  • Click on the plus sign next to storage and click on “Disks”
  • Here you will see the Model of your Hard Drive and if you have multiple Hard drives then scroll down to see the Model of the other Hard drives
  • If you still not sure who makes your hard drive then Simply google these Models and if you still not sure
