Installation and configuration of DHCP Server role?


DHCP Server Role Installation

To install the DHCP server
  • Go to Server Manager, right-click on Roles and select Add Role, 
  • A new Wizard will start press Next and Next
  • At next step on Network connection binding, select the Network card from which you wish that DHCP related requests received by this network card and press Next
  • At the next step type Domain name "engineer.com" and below it type the DNS IP address and press validate and press Next and Next
  • Now at this step in DHCP scope press Edit, type the name of the scope and type the information such as Start IP=192.168.1.1, End IP=192.168.1.254, Subnet mask=255.255.255.0, Default gateway=192.168.1.1 and then checkmark on Activate and press Ok and Next  At the Next step on IPV6 checkmark on Disable and press Next
  • At the next step, it is asking that if you want to assign IP addresses in the domain then you need to authorize it, use the Administrator credentials and press Next and press Install 

Exclusion Range


  • Go to DHCP Manager and Expand the Server name, then scope
  • Right-click on the Address Pool and select "New Exclusion Range"
  • A new window will open, type start and End IP addresses such as Start IP=192.168.1.1 to End IP address192.168.1.4 and press Add
  • Now Go to client and remove the pre-assigned IP address from TCP/IP properties  such as open the CLI and Type ipconfig /all it will show the IP address now to remove ipconfig /release and to get the new IP from DHCP type ipconfig /renew now this time it will get the IP address 192.168.1.5 means other than the exclusion range.

Reservation of IP Address

  • Through facility, we can reserve an IP address such that every time it will allocate to a particular PC so to create reservation IP address
  • Go to DHCP Manager and Expand the Server name, then scope in IPV4
  • Right-click on the Reservation and select "New Reservation"
  • New reservation window will open but the only thing is to allow an IP address to a particular PC we should know the MAC address of that PC so now there are two ways to get the MAC of that PC one is on server open CLI and type arp -a it will only show in a way if we did communicate it and the second way is to go the that particular client and type getmac then it will show the mac id such as 00-19-B9-48-5E-8B
  • Now on the New reservation window type the name suppose File Server and IP address suppose 192.168.1.100 we want to reserve then type the Mac id and press Add and close now this 192.168.1.100 has been reserved for 00-19-B9-48-5E-8B.

Changing the IP Address Range in Scope

  • Go to DHCP Manager and Expand the Server name, then scope in IPV4
  • Right-click on the Scope and go to its "Properties"
  • Now in the General Tab, we can change everything such as name of the scope and the range as well press Ok and Apply

Changing the Lease Period

  • Go to DHCP Manager and Expand the Server name, then scope in IPV4
  • Right-click on the Scope and go to its "Properties"
  • Now in the General Tab, we can change everything such Lease Duration and by default it is for 8 days press Ok and Apply
  • Lease Duration can be checked in TCP/IP Properties in IPV4 by pressing details

DHCP Backup and Restore

  • Go to DHCP Manager Right-click on the Server Name and select Backup
  • A new window will open Now select the location where you want to save the backup and press Ok
  • Suppose we have deleted the whole scope  so To Restore it again Right-click on the Server name and select restore
  • A new window will open now go to the exact location where your Backup is saved and select it and press Ok
  • Now-Again go to the server name right-click and select Authorize and Refresh it

Creating Multiple Scopes

Suppose we have a scenario  in which we have two network cards installed on our server. 10.10.10.254 and ( 255.255.255.0) is subnet mask on both network cards)is configured on one and 192.168.1.254 is configured on other, now we want to make two scopes on our Server

  • Go to DHCP Manager and Expand the Server name
  • Right-click on the IPV4 and click on the New Scope
  • A new Wizard will start, type the name (ScopeRed) of the wizard and press Next
  • Type the Start and End IP addresses, leave the Mask as it is and press next
  • Now type the IP addresses if you want to make any exclusion range in IP addresses, otherwise leave as it is and press Next now type the lease duration, the time for which you want to assign an IP address to a host, then check mark for the configuration of the default gateway and DNS IP address. Press Next and checkmark on Activate this scope and Finally press Finish.
  • Now again Right-click on the IPV4 and click on the New Scope
  • A new Wizard will start, type the name (ScopeGreen) of the wizard and press Next
  • Follow the same procedure as followed by for ScopeRed
  • After making this the arrow will be Red on this scope no Right Click on this scope and select on Activate.
